Bio

Chief Michael Turner began his law enforcement career in 1979.  Previous to his overseas assignments, Mike has served as the Deputy County Manager/Public Safety Director for Henry County, Georgia; Chief of Police in Monroe, Georgia; Chief of Police in Elberton, Georgia; Supervisor of Operations Training for the Georgia Police Academy in Forsyth; Detective Sergeant with the Athens Police Department; and, Acting Police Chief / Police Officer for the City of Bogart, Georgia.

Chief Turner most recently served as the Senior Police Advisor for the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs section at the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia.  For eleven (11) years he has been providing training, mentoring and other assistance to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (the Georgian national police) to reform their agency to comply with modern democratic and community based policing principles. 

Previous to Georgia, Mike served in the same position in Sudan, Iraq, the Philippines and as the Chief of Staff for the International Policing efforts in Kosovo.  While in Iraq, Mike was the sole police advisor assigned to the Baghdad Operations Center during the surge working with Iraqi Police in counter-insurgency efforts.

Mike has a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from Columbus State University.  He is a graduate of the F.B.I. National Academy, Session 204; the F.B.I. Law Enforcement Executive Development Program; and a graduate of the Georgia Law Enforcement Command College.  He holds multiple instructor certification in the State of Georgia.  He is a recipient of the National Sheriff’s Association Medal of Valor and the Monroe Country Sheriff's Department Medal of Valor.
